December 07, (THEWILL) – I’m Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed that he will retire within months if his team manages to defend last season’s historic English Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League treble.
The decorated manager has a contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2025 but stated that he will walk away entirely at the end of this 2023/2024 campaign if City complete back-to-back trebles. “If we win the treble this season, I’ll retire. That’s for sure,” Guardiola claimed, catching some off guard with the firmness of his statement.
No English club has ever won the treble in consecutive seasons. Of those that have managed it twice, the second treble has never come within five years of the first. Given that City have won only three of their last nine EPL games and currently sit fourth after defeat to Aston Villa, Guardiola may realise the chances of having to retire are slim.
City will kick off their FA Cup title defence in early January against Championship side Huddersfield Town. In the UCL, they have won all five group matches so far and are assured a seeded place in the Round of 16 draw this month before their final group fixture.
While some take Guardiola’s retirement promise with scepticism, the possibility exists that the most successful manager in City history could walk away at season’s end if his side successfully etches their names in football legacy forever.
