January 11, (THEWILL) – Nigeria won a crucial 1-0 TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Group D opener match against Egypt in Garoua on Tuesday, thanks to a first-half goal from Kelechi Iheanacho.
The match between the two group favourites had a one-sided feel to it, with Nigeria controlling the game for long stretches while Egypt struggled to make an impact.
Nigeria took the lead in spectacular fashion through Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho, whose strike from the edge of the box struck the top corner.
Nigeria could have added to their total, but they squandered a slew of chances against a poor Egypt team led by captain Mohamed Salah.
As a result of the victory, the Super Eagles are currently in first place in Group D, while Egypt, led by Carlos Quieroz, have their work cut out for them in their next two group games if they are to retain their ratings as one of the favourites to win the competition.
