October 04, (THEWILL) – Leicester City returned to the top of the Championship with a convincing 3-0 home victory over third-placed Preston North End. Goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Kelechi Iheanacho in the second half secured the three points for Enzo Maresca’s side.
The first half was a tight affair with few clear chances for either team. Leicester bossed possession but struggled to break down a resolute Preston defence. The best opportunity fell to Preston’s Duane Holmes but he fired wide when through on goal.
The deadlock was finally broken on the hour mark when Jamie Vardy’s shot was deflected into the path of Dewsbury-Hall who slotted home. Iheanacho then doubled Leicester’s advantage with 15 minutes left, tapping in after good work from Youri Tielemans and an assist from compatriot Wilfred Ndidi.
Dewsbury-Hall wrapped up the scoring late on, slotting in the rebound after Freddie Woodman had initially saved Iheanacho’s effort. The win lifts Leicester back above Ipswich at the summit, with the Foxes now boasting a seven point gap over 3rd placed Preston.
It was a professional performance from Leicester who secured a vital three points against one of their main promotion rivals. Maresca will be delighted with his side’s ruthlessness in front of goal to pick up another three points on the early road back to the English Premier League.
