March 19, (THEWILL) – AC Milan’s hopes for a top-four finish were dealt another blow as they suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Udinese in Serie A.
Despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic becoming the oldest-ever Serie A goalscorer with a retaken penalty, Milan were unable to overcome a strong Udinese side. The hosts took an early lead and despite Milan’s efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net until Ibrahimovic’s historic penalty.
Milan were plagued with injuries and suspensions, with Olivier Giroud, Junior Messias, and Sergino Dest all unavailable for the match. Ibrahimovic, who had not started a match since January 2022, was given the captain’s armband. Despite Milan’s efforts, they were unable to secure a result against Udinese, who were on a six-round winless streak before this match.
The defeat further dampens Milan’s hopes for a top-four finish, with the club now sitting in fifth place in Serie A. Udinese, on the other hand, will look to build on this victory as they travel to face Bologna in their next match. Milan will face a tough challenge away to runaway league leaders, Napoli after the international break.
