December 02, (THEWILL) – Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke the deadlock as AC Milan beat Genoa 3-0 to break a four-game winless streak in the league. Unfortunately, Simon Kjaer was pulled off after only five minutes due to an injury, adding to Milan’s defensive troubles in recent weeks.
Within ten minutes, however, Milan had opened the scoring, as the inspirational Ibrahimovic scored a free-kick from 25 yards out. Then, Junior Messias, in what was his debut start for the club, doubled Milan’s lead on the verge of halftime.
He brilliantly looped his header towards the far post and above Sirigu after latching on to a deflected ball that had cannoned into the air.
After an hour, Milan added a third goal, and Brahim Diaz was there in the thick of it, as he had been all night. He picked up the ball just inside the box and laid it out to the right for Messias, who tucked it into the bottom left corner with finesse.
At the final whistle, Milan claimed second place in the league with this convincing 3-0 win at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. It was enough to see them regain control of their title challenge especially after league leaders Napoli slipped up at home to Sassuolo.
Milan leapfrogged Inter Milan and are now only one point behind Napoli, after matchday 15, as the top three teams in Serie A begin to separate themselves from the rest of the league.
