November 05, (THEWILL) – American singer cum actress, Selena Gomez, has stated that she contemplated suicide several times after battling psychosis, which lead to her being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
She spoke about her mental health struggles in a raw new interview with Rolling Stone, as she prepares for the release of her upcoming documentary.
“I thought the world would be better if I wasn’t there,” she told the publication, noting that she only struggled with the thought but never attempted suicide.
Gomez revealed she had been to four treatment centres amid her mental health battle.
“I’m going to be very open with everybody about this: I’ve been to four treatment centers.
“I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.
“After walking out of psychosis, I was put on medication that felt like there was no part of me there again.”
According to Rolling Stone, Gomez experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows that would go on for weeks or months. She was unable to determine what exactly led to the emotions either.
There were also times she would be unable to sleep for days. At times, she felt convinced she needed to purchase a new car for everyone she knew – a symptom of mania. “I have a gift and I wanted to share it with people,” she told the publication of her thought process at the time.
In describing her lows, Gomez said she sometimes spent weeks in bed.
“It would start with depression, then it would go into isolation,” she said.
