August 01, (THEWILL) – Thousands of youths, on Thursday, barricaded major streets and Government House in Sokoto metropolis to participate in the ongoing nationwide protest against hunger and economic hardship.

The aggrieved youths, who marched across major streets, chanted solidarity songs and carried placards with inscriptions such as “End bad governance”, “We are hungry”, “Tinubu return subsidy”, “Tinubu must go”, “Solve Sokoto security challenges” and “We stand on N65 per litre of PMS” among many others.

They called on the Federal Government to re-introduce the fuel subsidy and revert the exchange rate to N400 per US dollar. These, according to them, are the main causes of hunger, poverty, inflation, and general untold hardship across the country.

One of the protesters, who simply identified himself as Abubakar, said they were out to be heard for the needful to be done by “our leaders whom we elected”.

“It’s unfortunate that we are worst hit by poverty, hunger, insecurity and banditry. All these need to be addressed, including the issue of fuel subsidy which should be returned,” he said.

However, in the course of the protest, some youths were seen vandalising some shops along major streets of Ahmadu Bello Way and Dandiman junction among others.

Meanwhile, security operatives are currently patrolling various streets in the state, while government and commercial activities are unhindered.
