August 27, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United midfielder, Sandro Tonali, is set to return to action in the League Cup second-round match against Nottingham Forest following a 10-month ban for betting rule violations. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed Tonali’s inclusion in the squad, pending his completion of training.

Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan, was banned by the Italian Football Federation in October 2023 and received an additional two-month suspended ban from the England Football Association. During his suspension, the 24-year-old Italian attended treatment for gambling problem and gave talks about gambling addiction risks.

Howe emphasised that while Tonali is physically fit, he lacks match practice. The manager praised Tonali’s hard work with the sports science team to maintain his fitness during the ban. Tonali’s only goal for Newcastle came on his league debut last season before his suspension began in late October 2023.

The manager acknowledged the scrutiny Tonali will face upon his return but stressed the importance of allowing him to play to his strengths. Howe expressed hope that returning to football will be a positive experience for Tonali after his long period of reflection.

Tonali’s ban also prevented him from representing Italy in the European Championship. His return marks a significant moment for both the player and Newcastle United as they look to strengthen their midfield options for the remainder of the 2024/2025 season.
