BEVERLY HILLS, December 14, (THEWILL) – Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has died at the age of 73.

Houllier was invited to become joint team manager of Liverpool alongside Roy Evans in 1998, having impressed with his work in his homeland.

The Frenchman was a huge hit at Anfield, rebuilding the team and was in charge of Liverpool from 1998-2004 and most memorably won the treble in 2000/01 with victory in the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.

Liverpool also won the UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001 and won the League Cup again the following season under the Frenchman.

Houllier was hit by health problems during his time at Liverpool and, in October 2001, was rushed to hospital. That was due to the discovery of a heart condition with Phil Thompson then taking temporary charge of the Reds.

Houllier later returned to the role he loved and stayed at Liverpool until 2004, when Rafa Benitez then took charge.

In his time as a manager, he also took charge of Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon, and the French national team.

In 2003 he was awarded an honorary OBE for his contributions to British football.
