February 10, (THEWILL) – Sopela neo-pro cyclist, Estela Domínguez, died on Thursday afternoon, after being hit by a truck during a training ride.
The incident took place near Villares de la Reina, near Salamanca in the northern Castilla y León region of Spain, where she was training at a crossroads near an industrial estate. The Spanish Cycling Federation, RFEC, expressed its condolences to the family of the 18-year-old and called for greater respect for cyclists on the road.
The incident was reported to the emergency services at 6:32pm, but despite their efforts, they were unable to save Domínguez. Sopela announced the tragic news on Twitter, expressing their pain and sorrow. Local authorities are investigating the incident, with initial reports suggesting that the truck driver may have been distracted by the sun affecting their visibility.
Domínguez was a talented young cyclist, who had participated in both road and cyclocross races as a junior. She was second in the Women’s Cup, the national junior competition, and finished top five in both the junior road race and the time trial at the Spanish National Championships. In addition to her cycling career, she was also studying Human Resources and Labour Relations at the University of Salamanca.
Domínguez was the daughter of former professional racer, Juan Carlos Domínguez, and was remembered with love and tributes from the Spanish cycling community.
