March 26, (THEWILL)- In preparation for Euro 2024, Germany has unveiled plans to implement heightened security measures. The Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, revealed that temporary border controls will be introduced across all German borders during the event to prevent potential threats and violent actors from entering the country.

With an expected influx of 2.7 million fans into stadiums and up to 12 million spectators at public viewing events, the authorities are going the distance to ensure the safety of participants and attendees. Faeser emphasised the need to pool security forces more strongly and prepare for any possible threats that may arise.

The decision to implement temporary border controls comes in the wake of a devastating mass shooting at a concert in Moscow, which claimed the lives of 139 individuals and injured 180 others. Western intelligence agencies have linked the attack to the Islamic State militant group, prompting France, hosts of the Olympics, to raise its terror alert warning to the highest level.

Germany has already implemented temporary border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland, as part of efforts to combat migrant smuggling gangs. While the specifics of the enhanced security measures for Euro 2024 are yet to be finalised, an interior ministry spokesperson confirmed that existing border controls could be extended.

The Euro 2024 tournament, scheduled to commence on June 14, will attract football enthusiasts from around the globe. By implementing these proactive security measures, German authorities aim to ensure a safe and secure environment for all participants and spectators, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the spirit of the beautiful game without fear of attacks.
