August 29, (THEWILL) – Erling Haaland has been named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the 2022/2023 season following a stunning debut campaign at Manchester City.
The Norwegian striker set the English Premier League alight in his first year in England, breaking the 38-game season scoring record as he netted 36 times in just 35 appearances.
Haaland saw off competition from City teammates Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones to claim the award, as well as Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard and former Tottenham forward, Harry Kane.
“It’s an honour to win this prestigious award,” Haaland said. “To be recognised by your competitors is a great feeling and I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me. It was an unforgettable season for the team and me personally.”
Man City Director Of Football, Txiki Begiristain, heaped praise on Haaland, saying: “His goal-scoring record last season was obviously incredible but his influence all over the pitch continues to grow. He is a world-class player and we’re very proud of him.”
The award caps a remarkable year for Haaland, who inspired City to the EPL title in his first season in England after arriving from Borussia Dortmund last summer. They made it a treble-winning season when they added the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League trophy to their season haul.
