May 16, (THEWILL) – Pep Guardiola has identified Liverpool as “one of the most perfect teams I have seen in my life” and expressed his delight that the Premier League title fight is approaching a “fair” finish.
Manchester City had to fight valiantly to draw 2-2 at West Ham on Sunday, with Riyad Mahrez missing a late penalty that would have given them all three points and opened a breathing space at the top from Liverpool.
But, City still have a four-point lead over the Reds, although Klopp’s side has two games to play and will ensure the championship fight goes to the wire if they avoid loss against Southampton on Tuesday. The situation feels ideal for Guardiola moving into a thrilling final week of the English Premier League.
“I said to the players after the game that we could not expect any difference against a team fighting to win the Premier League that is one of the most perfect teams I have seen in my life,” said the City boss.
“Against this Liverpool you cannot win the league a month ago or two or three fixtures ago. You have to fight until the end.
“I said [to the players] today not to be sad because you gave a really good performance and it is fair against this opponent to arrive on the final day to decide who is the best, because both teams are too good.”
Jack Grealish powered City’s second-half comeback at the London Stadium, and the offensive midfielder faces Aston Villa on Sunday, the club he left for the Etihad Stadium in a £100 million move.
