November 22, (THEWILL) – Pep Guardiola has agreed to a two-year contract extension at Manchester City, keeping him with the club through 2025.
The agreement will be set up as an initial one-year contract with a two-year extension option for both the club and the manager. Therefore, if either party has a change of heart, the contract can be terminated sooner. This is not dissimilar from the agreement he signed in November 2020.
Guardiola, 51, who took over as manager of Manchester City in 2016, following stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, had a previous contract that was due to end at the conclusion of this season. Since taking over, he and Manchester City have clinched four Premier League crowns, one FA Cup, and four League Cups.
In the 2020/2021 season, City also made it to the UEFA Champions League final, where they fell 1-0 to English Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Etihad side has had a successful start to the current season, five points behind leaders Arsenal in the standings.
They defeated Chelsea to advance to the fourth round of the EFL Cup and are in the knockout round of this season’s UCL. They will play RB Leipzig in the round of 16. It was anticipated that Guardiola will extend his contract after he stated earlier this month that he thought it improbable he would lead a greater team than Manchester City.
