February 20, (THEWILL) – In a tightly contested game between Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club Bilbao, it was Atlético, who came out on top with a 1-0 victory.
The game remained goalless for the entirety of the first half, with both teams struggling to find the back of the net. However, in the 73rd minute, Atlético’s Antoine Griezmann, delivered a cross and low shot that found the net and was enough to win the tie for the home team.
Athletic made a series of substitutions throughout the second half, bringing on fresh legs in an attempt to turn the game around. However, they were unable to find an opener or, much later, an equaliser with several shots saved by Atlético’s goalkeeper, Jan Oblak.
Atlético also made a number of changes, bringing on new players to maintain their lead and secure the victory. The win sees Diego Simeone’s side reach 41 points in the La Liga standings, 10 whole points behind city rivals Real Madrid, who are second on the table. Both Madrid sides meet next on Saturday, in the Derby.
Meanwhile, Athletic are 7th in the table. Both teams will be looking to build on their performances in the coming weeks, as they aim to achieve their respective goals for the season. Athletic are up against Girona next Sunday.
