October 08, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid secured a 2-1 victory at home against Real Sociedad on Sunday, thanks to a late Antoine Griezmann penalty. Despite dominating the early stages, Atletico relied on the intervention of VAR to overturn a Sociedad equaliser and hand them the points.
The hosts controlled proceedings early on and deservedly took the lead through Samuel Lino’s tidy 22nd minute finish. However, they were frustrated by hitting the woodwork multiple times and some stoic Sociedad defending. The visitors grew into the game and equalised through Mikel Oyarzabal after a rapid 73rd minute counter attack.
Just as Sociedad looked to have secured a hard-fought away point, VAR intervened. Referee Munuera Montero penalised Carlos Fernandez for handball after reviewing video replays, allowing Griezmann to slot home an 89th minute spot-kick.
Understandably, Sociedad players and staff were furious at the decision to award the decisive penalty. However, Atletico held on to claim three vital points, moving them up to 4th in La Liga.
The late drama typified a chaotic game in which VAR was again controversial. In post-match comments, Griezmann acknowledged decisions often come down to a referee’s interpretation, emphasising the need for clearer rules.
