September 02, (THEWILL) – Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, has completed a season-long loan move to Spanish club Getafe, it was announced late on Friday evening.
The deal will see the 21-year-old play in La Liga for the 2022/2023 campaign without a loan fee, with Getafe making only a small contribution to his salary according to reports. The loan enables Greenwood to restart his career away from Old Trafford after he was subject to an internal club investigation following his arrest in January. The case brought against him by the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service for attempted rape, assault and coercive control was discontinued in February, with Greenwood denying all alleged offences.
He has not played for Manchester United since 22 January 2022, with the club confirming on 21 August that they had decided against reintegrating him into the first-team squad. Several clubs across Europe had been in contact about a potential transfer before an agreement was reached with Getafe on deadline day.
In a statement, Manchester United said: “The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United. The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”
The 21-year-old will now hope to get his career back on track in Spain under manager Pepe Bordalas. Greenwood has been at Manchester United since the age of six and broke into the first team in 2019, scoring 35 goals in 129 appearances.
