Governor Yahaya Bello Accuses United States Of ‘Unwarranted Interference’ In Nigeria’s Politics With Visa Ban

BEVERLY HILLS, September 17, (THEWILL) – Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who was reelected governor for another term in November last year has accused the United States Government of “unwarranted interference” and attempting to “taint” his reelection by issuing a visa ban on some persons it said undermined democracy in his election and in the governorship election in Bayelsa State.

THEWILL recalls that the Supreme Court upheld the governor’s reelection.

In a protest letter addressed to the Ambassador of the United States in Nigeria, dated September 16, 2020, and signed by the Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Folashade Ayaode Arike, Governor Bello said the US government has no business in “Nigeria’s political and social processes.”

“Let it be noted that we’re not challenging your visa bans in any way whoever they may affect and for how long, but we do register the strongest protest possible as a state to the collateral and unwarranted interference in our political and social processes which it represents,” the governor said.

“You have reignited already dying embers of discord around the February/March General Elections and the November 16 Kogi State gubernatorial elections of 2019.

“This has invariably made our usual post-election duty of reconciliation with fair-minded political opponents all the more harder,” the governor added.

Bello was elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
