Goalless Draw Against Madagascar Sends Angola Through To AFCON

September 7, (THEWILL) – The Angolan national team booked their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals on Thursday evening, after holding Madagascar to a 0-0 draw in their qualification match at Estádio Nacional da Tundavala.

Despite exerting early pressure, Angola struggled to capitalise on their chances in the first half, with the teams entering the break scoreless.

Looking to ignite his attack, Angolan manager, Pedro Goncavles, brought on seasoned forwards, Helder Costa and Gelson, in the second period. However the Barea’s defence, marshalled by Théodin Ramanjary, remained resolute as the match ended goalless.

While disappointed not to claim victory on home soil, the draw was enough for Angola to finish second in Group E behind Ghana, who had already qualified. In contrast, Madagascar conclude their campaign without a single win, finishing bottom of the group on just 3 points.

With their ticket to the 2023 finals now booked, Angola will hope to improve their goal scoring form before the tournament gets underway next year.
