October 08, (THEWILL) – A Ligue 1 match between Montpellier and Clermont on Sunday, was abandoned in dramatic fashion after the visiting goalkeeper Mory Diaw was struck by a firecracker thrown from the crowd in injury time.
Television footage showed the firecracker landing next to Diaw’s feet and exploding loudly, causing the keeper to fall to the ground in shock. He required treatment before being stretchered off, prompting officials to halt the match following a crisis meeting.
“The doctor certified Diaw was unable to return to the field. The match is therefore abandoned,” said referee Florent Batta.
Montpellier were leading 4-2 when the incident occurred and now risk serious punishment, with the prospect of replaying the match without fans.
