September 10, (THEWILL) – Globacom may still be behind MTN and Airtel in the size of its internet subscriber base, but its latest numbers show the Nigerian telecoms battle is not only about who has the most customers.

In May, Glo added about 1.3 million internet subscribers, taking its internet subscriber base from roughly 15.5 million in April to 16.8 million, according to figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission. That was almost half of the 2.67 million net additions recorded across the industry during the month.

Airtel followed with about 1.07 million new internet subscribers, while MTN added 382,894.

Nigeria ended May with about 157 million internet subscribers, up from 154.3 million in April.

Glo Took The Biggest Share Of New Connections

Glo’s May performance is significant because the company added more than three times MTN’s monthly internet subscriber gain despite MTN having a substantially larger subscriber base.

The figures also show how competitive Nigeria’s data market has become, with operators fighting for customers through network expansion, data offers, bonuses and digital services.

Globacom attributed its growth to continued investment in network modernisation and infrastructure expansion, saying it remained focused on improving data services and digital connectivity.

The company disclosed the figures as it marked its 23rd anniversary in Lagos, where it also unveiled new products and launched its “Never Settle for Less” corporate advocacy campaign.

Its new offerings include the Welcome Bonus, Talkmasta Reloaded, Magic Data Bundles and an upgraded Glo Café 3.0 application.

Glo Is Also Betting On AI To Keep Customers

Beyond the subscriber numbers, Glo is using its digital platforms to make its services more interactive.

The upgraded Glo Café 3.0 includes an artificial intelligence-powered assistant called Gloria, which Glo says can respond to customer questions and help users find available offers through voice and text.

Gloria supports English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, French and Spanish, giving Glo an AI-powered customer service tool that can communicate in several languages used by its customers.

The company has also introduced new data and call incentives.

Its enhanced Welcome Bonus gives new customers benefits valued at ₦2,100, including 20 minutes of calls to all networks, 2GB of data and a one-month GloTV Premium subscription.

Also, its Magic Data Bundles are priced at ₦1,600 and ₦3,500, with bonus data ranging from 500MB to 12GB depending on the package.

Glo said the bundles can be purchased through Glo Café or by dialling *312#.

For a company that added 1.3 million internet subscribers in one month, the next challenge is keeping them connected.

The May figures show Glo can attract customers. Its network investments, pricing offers and new digital services will determine how many stay.
