January 14, (THEWILL) – With rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, contesting the 2024 Spanish Super Cup final, on Sunday evening, Girona had a prime opportunity to extend their advantage at the top of La Liga.
However, a goalless stalemate away at bottom-placed Almeria means they move only one point clear, failing to fully capitalise with the title challengers otherwise engaged.
Despite Almeria’s lowly position, boasting no wins from 20 matches this campaign, visitors Girona struggled to break the deadlock. With the scores still level heading into the closing stages, midfielder Aleix Garcia received his marching orders for denying a goalscoring opportunity.
The red card put Girona on the back foot and they relied on Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to repel Almeria’s limited attacking threats.
Ultimately for Girona, a disappointing afternoon where chances to extend their surprise title push went begging. Almeria, 10 points adrift of safety, produced a stoic defensive display and was unlucky not to snatch an unlikely victory against the division’s in-form team. Girona manager Michel Sanchez will demand a response after slipping up against the league’s bottom side.
