Ghana Stunned By Comoros In 2026 World Cup Qualifier

November 21, (THEWILL) – Tuesday evening saw a massive upset in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifying, as Ghana were stunned 1-0 by Comoros. This surprise result blows Group I wide open and deals an early blow to Ghana’s hopes of reaching the global showpiece in North America.

Playing at Stade de Moroni, the host Coelacanths secured victory through a Myziane Maolida goal in the 43rd minute. The strike was set up by Yacine Bourhane and sent Comoros in 1-0 up at half-time.

Ghana did threaten at times in the first half with the likes of forwards Antoine Semenyo and brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew combining well. However, they failed to properly test Comoros keeper Salim Ben Boina.

The second half saw Ghana make a triple substitution to try to find an equaliser but the attempts of Mohammed Kudus, Ernest Nuamah and Majeed Ashimeru could not break down an increasingly stubborn Coelacanths defence.

Comoros even looked dangerous themselves late on with counterattacks led by substitutes Rafiki Said and Ahmed Mogni. Yet, one goal was enough as they held on for a famous victory that lifted them top of Group I after two triumphs so far.

The teams continue qualifying in June 2024. Ghana now face an uphill task against Mali and Central African Republic while Comoros battle Madagascar and Chad.
