Ghana Sack Hughton After AFCON Group Stage Elimination

January 24, (THEWILL) – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the dismissal of national team coach Chris Hughton, following the Black Stars’ failure to progress from their group at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Ghana picked up just 2 points from their 3 matches, drawing with both Egypt and Mozambique. They lost their opener 2-1 against Cape Verde.

Hughton had been in charge of the Black Stars since February 2022, when he was initially brought in as a technical advisor before later being appointed as coach in March the following year. His side also endured a mixed start to the 2026 World Cup qualifying, highlighting his inability to get the best out of a talented squad.

The GFA released an official statement confirming Hughton’s departure, while also announcing the dissolution of the entire Black Stars technical team. They said they will lay out a “roadmap” in the coming days on plans to rebuild ahead of a crucial period of World Cup and AFCON qualifiers.

The 65-year-old former Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion boss replaced Otto Addo in 2023 after Addo himself stepped down following Ghana’s poor showing at the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar. Ghana have a history of instability with managers, which will likely hamper their chances of success in near future tournaments unless an overhaul succeeds.

Hughton’s position was initially backed by GFA chiefs after the opening loss to Cape Verde, but their failure to reach the knockouts in Ivory Coast ultimately spelt the end of his tenure after less than 12 months in charge. The search now begins for his long-term successor as Houghton follows Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet on his way out of job in the AFCON fallout.
