Gerrard Agrees New Long-Term Deal With Al Ettifaq

January 18, (THEWILL) – Steven Gerrard has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract extension with Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq, according to a report by The Athletic, on Thursday. The former Liverpool and England midfielder has agreed to prolong his stay as manager until 2027.

The news comes amid speculation that the club captain, Jordan Henderson, is set to terminate his deal after just six months, with the possibility of a move to Dutch giants Ajax to boost his chances of playing for England at Euro 2024.

Al Ettifaq brought in Henderson from Liverpool last summer as part of an ambitious recruitment drive which also saw the likes of Moussa Dembele, Demarai Gray and Georginio Wijnaldum arrive. However, the club now find themselves on an eight-match winless run, leading to Henderson’s impending exit.

Despite the poor form, Al Ettifaq remains committed to Gerrard’s project and has rewarded the 43-year-old with fresh terms as well as assurances over funds for new signings. Player development is said to be a key part of his remit.

Gerrard first stepped into management with Scottish outfit Rangers in 2018, leading them to the Premiership title in 2021, before taking over at Aston Villa last season. However, he won just 13 of his 40 games in charge at Villa Park before being dismissed.
