Germany To Stick With Flick Despite Early Qatar Exit

December 07, (THEWILL) – Despite Germany’s dismal outing at the World Cup in Qatar, the German Football Federation has decided to support Hansi Flick, to remain as coach after a meeting on Wednesday.

Bernd Neuendorf, the President of the Federation, stated that they had “full confidence” in Flick to guide the team through the 2024 European Championship, which Germany is slated to host and which Neuendorf described as a “great opportunity” for the nation’s football future.

After Germany’s early World Cup elimination, its third consecutive underwhelming showing at a major event, Flick was under pressure going into Wednesday’s meeting with Neuendorf and the Federation vice president, Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Although Flick left the meeting without addressing the press, he was quoted in a statement from the federation that read: “We as a team can achieve much more than we showed in Qatar. We missed a big opportunity there. We’ll learn our lessons from it. We want all of Germany to rally behind the national team again at the 2024 European Championship at home.”

Flick came under fire for his team selection and strategy in Qatar against group rivals Japan, Spain, and Costa Rica, as he was unable to settle on his preferred back four, and the team’s inability to convert chances.

THEWILL recalls that there was one fallout from Die Mannschaft’s early exit. Oliver Bierhoff, after serving as Executive Director of Germany’s national soccer teams and academy for 18 years, decided to step down on Monday, leaving the Federation without a replacement.
