November 09, (THEWILL) – The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has declared the seat of the deceased member, who represented Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency of Plateau State, Hon. Haruna Maitala, seat vacant.

Maitala died in an auto accident on April 3, 2021. The declaration, which was delayed for months due to pending submission of documentation of the death by the family of the deceased, was finally announced at Tuesday’s plenary by the Speaker.

By this declaration, the Speaker is required to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after which it would schedule the conduct of a by-election to fill the vacant seat.

Meanwhile, at the plenary, the lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Orire Federal Constituency of Oyo State, Hon. Jacob Ajao Adejumo, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adejumo, until his defection to the ruling party, was a member of the Action Democratic Party (ADP).

The lawmaker, in his defection letter read by the Speaker, Gbajabiamila, hinged his decision to leave his former party to the charismatic and all-inclusive, transparent and objective leadership of Gbajabiamila.

Adejumo, formerly an APC member, said he’s returning to the party to move the country forward.

He said, “I left the APC before for ADP, because I couldn’t get the ticket. But now, I’m going back home (APC).

“Your (Gbajabiamila) charismatic and all-inclusive, transparent and objective leadership of this house won my admiration for you and the progressives party in moving the nation forward.”
