June 29, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) has issued a distress call, urging corporate Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Sports to intervene and secure the country’s participation in the upcoming World University Games.
The Games, scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 8 in Chengdu, China, are at risk due to NUGA’s severe funding shortage. NUGA has selected 75 exceptional student-athletes across seven sports, who have undergone intensive training and demonstrated remarkable talent. However, their dreams of competing internationally are now in jeopardy.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NUGA’s Acting Secretary General, Chidiebere Ezeani, said: “We appeal to the government to come to our aid and support our athletes to the World University Games; we call upon the government, sports authorities and corporate sponsors to recognise the immense value of investing in university athletes. They are the future of Nigerian sports and their success will inspire generations to come.”
The World University Games not only showcase sporting excellence but also foster cultural exchange and global camaraderie among student-athletes worldwide. Ezeani noted that Nigeria’s participation in the event would demonstrate the country’s sporting prowess, enhance its international reputation, and serve as an inspiration to future generations of athletes.
NUGA called upon the government, sports authorities and corporate sponsors to step up and provide the necessary financial support, ensuring Nigeria’s representation at the World University Games. By extending a helping hand, the Association insisted, the country can empower its talented athletes to represent Nigeria with pride, resilience, and determination, ultimately contributing to the development of Nigerian sports.
