December 31, (THEWILL) – Southampton was left to rue missed opportunities as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Fulham on New Year’s Eve.

Despite controlling much of the match, Nathan Jones’ side was unable to convert their chances and was made to pay late in the game. Che Adams was at the heart of the threat for the visitors, with a shot but for the reflexes of Bernd Leno.

On their part, Southampton continued to create chances, with Samuel Edozie and Mohamed Elyounoussi, both going close. However, it was Fulham who took the lead in the first half, with James Ward-Prowse’s failed clearance leading to an own goal.

Southampton equalized early in the second half through a free-kick from Ward-Prowse, but Fulham regained the lead with a goal from Joao Palhinha. Deep into stoppage time, Fulham was awarded a penalty, but Southampton goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu saved Aleksandar Mitrovic’s spot kick to deny Fulham a third goal.

Despite the late heroics from Bazunu, Southampton was unable to find an equalizer and left west London with no points. Next up for Fulham, who are up to 7th in the table, is a trip to Leicester, while Southampton will host Nottingham Forest.
