August 26, (THEWILL) – The Special Ad-hoc Committee investigating fuel subsidy, has issued a notice, inviting the Auditor General of the Federation (AGF), Okolieaboh Sylvia, to provide relevant financial transactions on the fuel subsidy between 2013 and 2022.
The lawmakers also directed the office of the AGF to provide relevant financial transactions on the fuel subsidy for the period within review.
This was disclosed by Rep. Ibrahim Aliyu, the Chairman, Special ad hoc Committee on fuel subsidy, in Abuja on Thursday.
The AGF is expected to appear before the House of Representatives on Tuesday, 30th August, 2022, to provide documentary evidence on the audit carried out on the monies used by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited for payment of fuel subsidy between 2013 and 2022.
The Chairman of the committee, Aliyu, said that “the invite is in the bid to ensure fair hearing as enshrined in the law. The aim of the hearing was not to witch hunt any agency, but to ensure that government is not surcharged by any agency of government either.”
He added that a situation where people appear before the committee with unverified documents would not be tolerated.
Another member of the committee, Isiaka Ibrahim, told the representative of the Accountant General of the Federation, and Director Overseeing Federation Accounts, Mr Mohammed Saleh, to have an independent monitoring mechanism to verify the veracity of the transactions.
Saleh also expressed the need for the office of the Accountant General of the Federation to ensure due diligence by verifying the transaction documents submitted by all government agencies in line with its functions as spelt out in the Act.
Also, Mark Gbillah, after thorough scrutiny of the documents, identified some discrepancies in the amount computed in the NNPC documents.
