May 23, (THEWILL) – Barbora Krejcikova, the defending champion, was eliminated from the French Open first round after losing to Diane Parry 1-6 6-2 6-3.
The second seed arrived in France to defend her title and appeared to be in command of the match after taking the opening set handily. However, the 19-year-old Parry, who was cheered on by the French audience, fought back to win the second set and then the final.
Last year, the 26-year-old Krejcikova won the Roland Garros clay court tournament by defeating Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final. In her fifth Grand Slam appearance, Krejcikova was unable to continue where she left off, as Parry dominated her in the final two sets.
The stage appears set for world number one and former French Open champion, Iga Swiatek to continue her imperial form in the court all the way to another victory at Roland Garros.
