October 13, (THEWILL) – With their fourth victory in as many games, SC Freiburg, who is currently atop Group G, defeated FC Nantes 4-0 to qualify for the next round of the UEFA Europa League.
After missing two games due to COVID, manager Christian Streich was back in the dugout, and his team resisted early pressure from the visiting French side as Moussa Sissoko and Pedro Chirivella hit the post. Lukas Kübler scored the only goal of the half in the 26th minute to break the deadlock.
Michael Gregoritsch added a second-half goal to make it 2-0 and in the 82nd minute, an error by newly substituted Nantes center-half Jean-Charles Castelleto allowed Kevin Schade to gain possession of the ball in front of goal. The youth international for Germany gratefully accepted the gift and scored the 3-0 as the ball went in off Moses Simon for an own-goal.
Five minutes later, Gregortisch’s long-range shot was spilled by goalkeeper Alban Lafont, and Woo-Yeong Jeong converted the rebound to make it a resounding 4-nil victory.
The result means that a win or a draw against Qarabag FC in two weeks, will see SC Freiburg advance directly to the round of 16 and avoid having to play in the knockout round playoffs introduced this season.
