Former EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde Is Dead

May 26, (THEWILL) – A former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde, is dead.

According to Premium Times, Lamorde, a police officer who served as EFCC chairman between 2011 and 2015, died in Egypt where he had travelled for medical treatment.

Confirming Lamorde’s death in a statement, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, described it as sudden and shocking, adding that the late anti-graft agency boss served the nation actively as a focused and gallant anti-graft fighter.

“He will be sorely missed both at the EFCC and the nation at large. The Commission prays for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family, the EFCC and the entire nation,” the statement said.

The late EFCC boss was born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State. He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1984.

Lamorde, 61, joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1986. He was deployed to the EFCC at the inception of the agency as the pioneer Director of Operations.

However, Lamorde first acted as Chairman of the agency between December 2007 and January 2008 before Farida Waziri was appointed Chairperson and confirmed by the Senate in June 2008.

He was again appointed in an acting capacity as Chairman of the Commission on November 3, 2011, after the removal of Farida Waziri by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Lamorde was confirmed as the third substantive Chairman of the agency by the Senate on February 15, 2012. He was, however, replaced with Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of EFCC by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015.

He returned to the police where he retired as Deputy Inspector General in 2021 after he was removed as EFCC Chairman.
