March 13, (THEWILL) – Flying Eagles defenders Augustine Njoku and Solomon Agbalaka have been named in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Best XI of the TotalEnergies 2023 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The duo played a key role in Nigeria’s campaign, which saw them finish as the third-best team after a 4-0 victory over Tunisia in the 3rd place playoff on Friday. Senegal emerged as the winners of the tournament after beating The Gambia 2-0 in the final on Saturday.
The CAF team of the tournament featured four players from Senegal, two from Gambia and Congo each, and one from Uganda. Interestingly, Nigeria’s impressive centre-back, Benjamin Fredrick, and winger Ibrahim Muhammad, who played crucial roles in their team’s success, missed out on the list.
Njoku played four matches for the seven-time African champions from the group stage to the quarter-finals, while Agbalaka was named Man-of-the-Match winner in the group matches against Egypt and Mozambique.
The U-20 AFCON champions, Senegal, along with Nigeria, Tunisia, and The Gambia, will represent Africa at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
