August 13, (THEWILL) – Germany coach, Hansi Flick, has stated that the Qatar World Cup is not a tournament “for fans” and that “football should be there for everyone.”
Since Qatar was given the opportunity to host the tournament’s upcoming edition, it has generated much controversy. Thousands of migrant labourers have reportedly died while organising for the world cup, and the nation’s attitude toward women and the LGBTQ+ community has been heavily criticised from the start.
The competition has created problems for both fans and players, even outside of the moral concerns, because of Qatar’s inadequate lodging options and the fact that it is scheduled to hold while the domestic and international club football season is in full swing.
“[I have friends] who would like to fly to Qatar, but choose not to for a variety of reasons. Football should be there for everyone. That is why I say it is not a World Cup for fans,” Flick said before acknowledging that “we have already had many discussions. We will sit down again in September and consider what we can do together with other nations – or want to do.”
Flick will be in charge as Germany’s head coach for the first time in a major event after Joachim Low was replaced following England’s upset victory over Germany in the Euro 2020 last-16 fixtures. In Group E, they will compete against Costa Rica, Spain, and Japan.
