First Lady Hosts Super Falcons After World Cup Round Of 16 Exit

August 14, (THEWILL) – The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, hosted a reception at the State House in Abuja, on Monday, for the Super Falcons women’s national football team.

The event was to honour the team after their recent performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia. Despite their early exit, Mrs. Tinubu commended the players for displaying dedication, resilience and team spirit throughout the tournament. She noted that the Super Falcons made Nigeria proud on the global stage and served as role models for young girls aspiring to achieve greatness.

In remarks at the reception, Mrs. Tinubu paid tribute to all the players and technical staff. She said: “I salute you today and welcome you back home and our goodwill and best wishes go to other players, who have gone back to their base. You gave your all, and we stand with you. We are so proud of you,”

The Super Falcons captain, Onome Ebi, thanked the First Lady for the warm reception. She promised that the team would continue to work tirelessly to bring the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy home to Nigeria.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, and the wife of the Senate President, Ekaette Akpabio. The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who was also in attendance, thanked the First Lady for honouring the team.

The feel-good reception marked a celebratory homecoming for the Super Falcons after their valiant World Cup run, even though it came up just short with their penalty loss to European champions, the Lionesses of England, at the round of 16 stage of the competition.
