March 19, (THEWILL) – Fiorentina have announced with profound sadness the death of their General Manager, Joe Barone, at the age of 57. Barone suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday, after being in hospital on life support before passing away on Tuesday, in Milan.
The Serie A club paid tribute to Barone as “one of its figureheads” who “marked the recent history of the club and will never be forgotten.” He had taken up his role at Fiorentina in November 2019 and was described as “a treasured friend who always stayed strong” through good times and difficult moments.
Barone’s cardiac arrest occurred as Fiorentina were departing their hotel to face Atalanta in a Serie A fixture on Sunday. The match was subsequently postponed, with the club initially stating the 57-year-old remained hospitalised on life support following his collapse.
In a statement on Tuesday, Fiorentina confirmed “with deep sorrow and immense sadness” that their general director “Giuseppe Barone passed away today at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan after suddenly falling ill on Sunday.” The American would have celebrated his 58th birthday on Wednesday.
