FIFA Postpones Scotland Versus Ukraine World Cup Qualifier

March 08, (THEWILL) – Scotland’s World Cup qualifier versus Ukraine has been postponed by the world football governing body, FIFA.

The match was set to take place on March 24 at Hampden Park, but the Ukrainian FA requested a postponement last week following Russia’s invasion of their nation. The postponement has now been approved.

It will most likely be rescheduled for the June international window when the Nations League’s first round is scheduled to take place. The World Cup draw will take place on April 1st.

To determine qualification, the winners of the rearranged match will face the winners of the other play-off semi-final — Wales vs Austria.

The match will still take place on March 24, but due to the postponement of the Ukraine game, the play-off final will be postponed as well.

Rod Petrie, the president of the Scottish FA, remarked last week: “Football is inconsequential amid conflict. But we have conveyed the strong sense of solidarity communicated to us by Scotland fans and citizens in recent days.

“(We) have offered to support our Ukrainian colleagues’ preparations as best we can in these unimaginably difficult circumstances.”

As a result of the invasion, FIFA and UEFA have banned Russia from international competition. On March 24, they were supposed to play Poland in Moscow. Poland has yet to learn whether or not they would be given a bye to the play-off final.

The World Cup is billed to run from November 21 to December 18. Scotland is attempting to reach their first World Cup final since 1998, while Wales has not competed in the tournament since 1958.
