The famous restaurant owner, whose real name is Nusret Gokce, was spotted on the field following the final, attempting to snap photographs with Argentina players, including Lionel Messi, and holding the World Cup as well, pictures of which quickly went viral.
His entry onto the field was not authorised, according to FIFA, whose rules specify that only the World Cup winners and leaders of states are permitted to touch the trophy during the closing ceremony.
According to a FIFA spokesperson: “Following a review, FIFA has been establishing how individuals gained undue access to the pitch after the closing ceremony at Lusail stadium on 18 December. The appropriate internal action will be taken.”
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has reportedly visited one of Salt Bae’s eateries, but neither Infantino nor FIFA have any affiliation with the Turkish celebrity chef, who gained notoriety and the alias Salt Bae on social media for his distinctive way of seasoning steaks.
