BEVERLY HILLS, August 12, (THEWILL) – World football governing body, FIFA, has celebrated the 35th anniversary of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets’ tournament victory at the maiden U-16 World Cup in China in 1985. The tournament was later renamed U-17.
THEWILL recalls that Nigeria won the championship on August 11, after the Sebastian Brodrick-Imasuen’s coached team defeated the Germans 2-0 in the final in Beijing.
FIFA, in its official social media handle, posted the picture of the Golden Eaglets to commemorate the anniversary.
“#OnThisDay 35 years ago, Nigeria won the inaugural FIFA U-16 Championship in Beijing,“FIFA tweeted.
THEWILL reports that Nigeria has won the trophy four more times, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015, emerging the second team since Brazil to win it back to back and also making them the first team ever to win it five times.
