February 28, (THEWILL) – The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President, Samuel Eto’o, has announced that Rigobert Song has departed his role as head coach of the Cameroon national team.
Eto’o stated on Wednesday that Fecafoot and its executive committee do not wish to renew Song’s contract after failing to achieve their objectives at the recent Africa Cup of Nations.
Cameroon were eliminated at the Round of 16 stage by eventual runners-up Nigeria in January 2022. As a former international teammate of Song, Eto’o appointed him to the head coaching position in February 2022. Under Song, Cameroon dramatically qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by defeating Algeria in a playoff decided via extra time.
However, at the World Cup in November, the five-time African champions were knocked out at the group stage despite a shock victory over Brazil in their final group match. Eto’o added praise for Song’s contributions but said Fecafoot must now focus on planning for Cameroon’s footballing future without him as head coach.
Song leaves the role having won only six of his 23 matches since taking charge of the Indomitable Lions in early 2022.
