FA Cup Quarter-Final Slot Booked As Wolves Beat Brighton

February 29, (THEWILL) – Wolverhampton Wanderers reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in over two decades, defeating Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 at Molineux Stadium on Wednesday night.

Mario Lemina capitalised on an error by Brighton keeper Jason Steele to score the deciding goal just two minutes into the match.

The victory sets up an enticing quarter-final clash against Championship side Coventry City. The winner of that match will advance to the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley.

Qualification for Europe is still possible through league placings for both Wolves and Brighton this campaign. Still, an FA Cup triumph presents a more direct path to continental competition next season.

After Lemina’s early strike, Brighton controlled possession for large stretches. Yet, quality finishing eluded them all evening. Jakub Moder and Facundo Buonanotte both narrowly missed levelling the score in the first half.

As the match wore on, Wolves were content to defend deep and counter-attack. Pedro Neto nearly doubled their advantage on one such foray forward.

In a desperate search for an equaliser, Brighton hemmed Wolves into their own end during the closing minutes. Veteran keeper Jose Sa and the hosts’ backline preserved the clean sheet despite intense pressure.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations from Wolves supporters, bringing Brighton’s Cup run to a disappointing conclusion.

Though an FA Cup title still seems unlikely, Wolverhampton supporters have reason to dream of the first trophy since 1960. Brighton’s long wait for major silverware continues.
