August 26, (THEWILL) – Rayo Vallecano have signed Colombian midfielder, James Rodriguez, as a free agent. The 33-year-old former Real Madrid player joined the Spanish club on Monday, after terminating his contract with Brazilian side Sao Paulo.

Rodriguez’s arrival comes during Rayo Vallecano’s centenary year, marking a significant addition to their squad. The club described the signing as a “star” acquisition for their “most special season” as they celebrate 100 years of history.

The Colombian playmaker recently helped his national team finish as runners-up in the Copa América, where he was voted player of the tournament. Rodriguez’s career highlights include winning the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup, which led to his transfer to Real Madrid. During his time with Los Blancos, he won two La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies.

After leaving Real Madrid in 2020, Rodriguez had spells with Everton, Al-Rayyan in Qatar, and Olympiacos in Greece before joining Sao Paulo in 2023. His move to Rayo Vallecano marks a return to Spanish football, where he first made his name in Europe.

The signing of Rodriguez is likely to boost Rayo Vallecano’s profile and on-field performance as they look to improve their standing in La Liga. The experienced midfielder brings a wealth of international and top-level club experience to the team.
