SAN FRANCISCO, January 27, (THEWILL) – Mr. Sunday Adebayo Adewusi, a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has died from an undisclosed ailment at the National Hospital in Abuja.
Police sources said Adewusi, 80, died on Tuesday night.
Adewusi served as Police IG from 1981-1983. He was succeeded by Mr. Etim Nyang.
The youngest police officer to become the IG in 1981 at 45 years old, Adewusi was the Asiwaju of Ogbomosholand until his death on Tuesday night.
He was born in Nassarawa Eggon LGA of Nassarawa State to the family of Pa Abraham Ishola Adewusi and Princess Abeje.
Before his appointment as IG, the was promoted as Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1959; Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1962; Superintendent of Police in 1963; Chief Superintendent of Police in 1967; Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1969 and Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1971.
He joined the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, and had his basic police training at the Police College from 1957 to 1958 as a cadet sub-inspector. At 32, he became a Commissioner of Police in 1972 and an Assistant Inspector-General of Police in 1975.
