Ex-Kano Governor Shekarau Defects To NNPP

June 29, (THEWILL) – Just a day after President Muhammadu Buhari met with aggrieved Senators of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a former Governor of Kano State and Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial district, Ibrahim Shekarau, has defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

His defection was announced at plenary on Wednesday, by the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan.

In Shekarau’s letter of resignation from the APC, he cited injustice and unfairness by Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as reasons he was leaving.

The letter parly reads: “I am defecting from the APC to my new party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, as a result of unfairness, injustice by Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

“For the past two years, there has been an unresolved crisis in the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, hence, I have resigned my membership.”

After the announcement, the Senate President directed the Chief Whip to lead Shekarau to the opposition row in the red chamber.

Shekarau’s formal defection to the NNPP, has to a large extent, according to political observers, further strengthened the party toward springing surprises in the 2023 general elections.
