December 18, (THEWILL) – Eve Gilles, a 20-year-old from Nord-Pas-de-Calais, recently made history, winning the Miss France 2023 crown with her distinctive pixie cut hairstyle.
The victory marks the first time in the pageant’s 103-year history that a contestant with short hair claimed the prestigious title.
The coronation ceremony, witnessed by 7.5 million TV viewers, saw Eve receiving the crown from previous winner Indira Ampiot, breaking away from the conventional image of Miss France with long, flowing hair and curves.
Defiantly embracing her androgynous look, Gilles stated, “We’re used to seeing beautiful Misses with long hair, but I chose an androgynous look with short hair.” She proudly celebrated her win as a triumph for diversity, emphasizing, “No one should dictate who you are,” highlighting the uniqueness of every woman.
The pageant’s voting system, a combination of public votes and jury decisions, played a crucial role in Gilles’ victory. Despite securing the third position in the public vote, the panel of judges propelled her to the top spot, securing her place in history.
Gilles, aspiring to become a statistician, stands as a beacon of change in the Miss France legacy, challenging beauty standards and inspiring a new era of acceptance and diversity. However, her groundbreaking win has sparked mixed reactions, with some viewers expressing dismay at the departure from the traditional image of Miss France.
