Europa: Roma Reach Semi-Finals With Aggregate Victory Over Milan

April 19, (THEWILL)- AS Roma advanced to the semi-finals of a European competition for the fourth consecutive year, after a 3-1 aggregate victory over AC Milan in their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash. The dramatic second-leg battle at the Stadio Olimpico saw Roma emerge victorious with a 2-1 win, maintaining their impressive European form.
On a wet night in the Italian capital, Milan’s early game plan was to retain possession and keep Roma chasing the ball. However, fate dealt them a blow as Lorenzo Pellegrini’s ambitious shot from distance cannoned off the post, allowing Gianluca Mancini to slot home the rebound and double Roma’s aggregate lead.
If Milan’s misfortune with the opening goal was unkind, the second was even more devastating. Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s shot for Milan struck the crossbar, before Matteo Gabbia sent a header wide from a corner. Moments later, a counterattack from Romelu Lukaku led to a deflected shot, and Gabbia’s misplaced pass found its way to Paulo Dybala, who calmly curled the ball into the far corner to extend Roma’s lead.
Despite Roma’s dominance, they too faced their share of adversity. Lukaku was forced off due to injury, and Zeki Celik was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Rafael Leao. Milan’s response was not particularly strong, and a potential handball incident in the Roma box was not awarded by the VAR.
In the second half, Milan made a double substitution, and they started the period well, winning a succession of corners. However, Roma had a chance to seal the tie, with Leonardo Spinazzola’s solo run and shot being denied by Mike Maignan. Late drama ensued as Milan pulled a goal back through Gabbia, but Roma held on to book their place in the semi-finals, keeping alive the possibility of a second European trophy in three seasons.
