April 20, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s UEFA Europa League campaign ended in disaster on Thursday night, as they were defeated by Sevilla with a crushing 3-0 loss, at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.
After squandering a 2-0 lead in the first leg through own-goals, United failed to recover in the second, with Sevilla scoring early and holding their lead throughout the match from even more atrocious errors by the Red Devils.
Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri broke the deadlock early after a poor touch from Harry McGuire, and after Loic Bade’s netted Sevilla’s second, En-Nesyri scored again late in the match to complete the rout. The hosts dominated from the start, with the energy from their fans translating onto the pitch. United struggled to find their footing and made several mistakes, including that poor pass from David de Gea to McGuire that led to En-Nesyri’s first goal.
Despite making changes at halftime that saw the introduction of Marcus Rashford to add bite to the attack and Luke Shaw to shore up the backline, United were yet unable to turn the tide of the game. Sevilla’s defense held strong, and De Gea’s error coming out of his goal to control a clearance but mistiming his attempt sealed their fate for good.
The 5-2 aggregate result means Sevilla, the Kings of Europa, advance to the semi-finals and will turn their attention to facing Villarreal in La Liga on Sunday, while United prepare to take on Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup semi-final on the same day.
