Euro 2024: Romania End 24-Year Drought, Advance With Slovakia

June 26, (THEWILL) – In a rain-soaked encounter at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Romania and Slovakia played out a 1-1 draw in their final Euro 2024 Group E match. The result ensured both nations advanced to the round of 16, marking Romania’s first progression past the group stage since 2000.

Slovakia opened the scoring through Ondrej Duda’s header, becoming the first Slovak to score in two separate European Championships. Romania equalised shortly after when Razvan Marin converted a penalty awarded following a VAR review of David Hancko’s foul on Ianis Hagi.

The second half saw both teams create opportunities to secure victory. Romania’s Marin was denied a brace by Martin Dubravka’s fine save, whilst Slovakia’s David Strelec forced Florin Nita into action with a low shot. Despite the challenging weather conditions, both sides maintained their attacking intent throughout.

Slovakia will rue their inability to hold onto the lead, having scored first in their fifth consecutive match. However, the primary objective of reaching the knockout stages was achieved. Romania, meanwhile, will be elated to have progressed from their group for the first time in 24 years.

The result sets up intriguing round of 16 matchups for both teams. Football fans can now look forward to seeing how these sides fare against tougher opposition in the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
