EPL: Liverpool Back On Top After Win Over Burnley

December 26, (THEWILL) – Striker Darwin Nunez, ended a 12-match goal drought to help fire Liverpool back to the top of the English Premier League table with a 2-0 victory away at Burnley on Saturday. The Uruguay international, who had not scored in the league since October, netted the opener in the first half before substitute Diogo Jota sealed the win with his 50th goal for Liverpool in the 90th minute.

While Liverpool recorded a comfortable win with two disallowed goals and hitting the woodwork, Jurgen Klopp’s side made it tougher against the struggling hosts who have now lost nine of their last 10 home fixtures. Burnley posed an early threat but wasted chances and was made to pay when Nunez curled in the opener in the 5th minute after a cutback from Cody Gakpo.

Liverpool continued to dominate with Mohamed Salah and Gakpo both going close, but Burnley showed fight early in the second half with chances for Jordan Beyer and Sander Berge. However, the away side managed the game well late on and secured an important three points to return to the summit ahead of Arsenal hosting West Ham on Thursday.

The win provides a confidence boost for Liverpool, who host Newcastle on Monday, while it leaves Burnley deep in relegation trouble after wins for fellow strugglers Luton and Nottingham Forest. Klopp will be delighted to grind out an away victory between two draining festive fixtures.
